This letter was sent to a church living in the shadow of large manifestations of paganism, a city where the proconsul, whose symbol of authority was the Roman gladius sword, had the power of life or death over his subjects.

Jesus commends this church for its faithfulness to him in such a time and place – the members had withstood this frontal attack but, unfortunately, had succumbed to the subtle ploy of compromise. He illustrates this by his reference to Balaam and to the Nicolaitans. The church had forgotten the findings of the Council of Jerusalem and tolerated the presence of those who taught that compromise was acceptable.

He urged them to remain faithful to him and promised his help and support. He encouraged them, and us, to have a renewed vision of our identity and of our destiny.
